LG CNS is the leader of data center innovation in Korea and has been duly recognized throughout the world.

LG CNS became the first in Korea to receive one of the Brill Awards, which are the most prestigious awards in the area of data centers. LG CNS’ Busan Global Cloud Data Center (hereinafter referred to as the Busan Data Center) was recognized as an outstanding data center in the area of ‘design’. The Busan Data Center was highly assessed for considering energy efficiency and safety starting from the design phase.

The Brill Awards are the most prestigious awards in the industry. Winners are chosen every year by the Uptime Institute, the only data center certification organization in the world.

Winners of the Brill Awards are selected every year by the Uptime Institute, the only data center certification organization in the world[1]. In line with its strong reputation, the Uptime Institute applies very rigorous screening criteria when it selects recipients of the Brill Awards. From among the roughly 23 thousand data centers in the world, 100 data centers in 19 countries were strong initial candidates. These data centers were screened by some 90 experts. In the end, Brill Awards were granted to only 18 outstanding data centers.

The LG CNS Busan Global Cloud Data Center is the world’s only data center with a ‘wind path’, which is a chimney, as well as a built-up air-conditioning system, for which a patent is pending. It brings together the latest data center technologies and is regarded as Korea’s leading data center. This is the front of the Global Cloud Data Center, located in the Mieum District of the Gangseo area of Busan Metropolitan City.

The Busan Data Center is the embodiment of the latest technologies and garnered attention for its ‘creativity’. Opened in 2013, the Busan Data Center boasts extraordinary energy efficiency. It is the world’s only data center with a ‘wind path’ chimney and that uses a ‘built-up air-conditioning system’, for which a patent is pending. The Busan Data Center is also Korea’s first to apply a seismic isolation system to provide uninterrupted service even in the event of an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale. The Data Center thus received recognition in the industry for its thorough preparation for disasters and calamities.[2]

■ LG CNS will actively move to attract global customers, touting its proven, unmatched data center competencies

The Brill Award means that LG CNS is now among the world’s top 0.1% of data centers: it is one of the best of the best. Most of the data centers that won the award in 2014 are in the Americas and Europe, and include eBay in the US and Telefonica in Spain. In Asia, winners were LG CNS in Korea and Taiwan Mobile in Taiwan.

Director Kim Jong-wan from the LG CNS Global Infrastructure Service commented on the receipt of the award, saying, “It gives me a great sense of honor to make known all around the world the great competencies of Korean data centers. Winning the award will certainly help us attract global customers.”

[1] Uptime Institute & Brill Awards
The Uptime Institute is the only international organization that rates data center design, composition, and operation. More than 85% of the members of this consortium are Fortune 100 companies. It oversees data center consulting, training, and seminars, and grants Tier Certifications, which are internationally recognized certifications for data center infrastructure. Headquartered in New York City, the Uptime Institute also has offices in Brazil, the UK, Dubai, Russia, and Singapore.

The Uptime Institute began presenting the GEIT (Green Enterprise IT) Awards in 2008 to excellent data centers all around the world. The GEIT Awards were elevated to the Brill Awards this year. The Brill Awards are the top awards in the field of data centers. Top data centers are recognized every year in five categories, including design and facility management.

[2] LG CNS Busan Global Cloud Data Center
Opened in 2013, the LG CNS Busan Global Cloud Data Center was established through a strategic alliance among the central government, a local government, and a private company to become a global IT hub. This ultra-large data center has a total floor area that is five times the size of a soccer field and can simultaneously run 72 thousand servers.

The Busan Data Center has an eco-friendly infrastructure featuring all available green information technologies, and has in place thorough preventive systems for earthquake and flood damage. LG CNS independently developed and adopted the ‘built-up air-conditioning system’ for the Busan Data Center to improve energy efficiency. The ‘built-up air-conditioning system’ draws in outside cold air, cools down servers in the computer rooms, and discharges the heated air through a central air path. With this system, the Busan Data Center is the most electric power-efficient data center in the world. The Busan Data Center is the first data center in Korea to apply a seismic isolation facility, which ensures that it can provide uninterrupted service even in the event of an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 on the Richter scale. Also, power system dualization facilities enable uninterrupted power supply. There are also other factors that have made the Busan Data Center one of the safest data centers in the world, such as comprehensive safety facilities including smart security.
